Chapter 9 - Day 6 - Lesson 9.4

Learning Targets
  • State hypotheses and check conditions for performing a significance test about a difference between two means.

  • Calculate the standardized test statistic and P-value for a significance test about a difference between two means.

  • Use the four-step process to perform a significance test about a difference between two means.

The NCAA March Madness tournament is going on.  The next big game coming up is between the University of North Carolina and Syracuse.  To predict who will win, we want to compare the points per game scored by each team.  We took a random sample of games during the 2016 season from each team and calculated the sample means and standard deviations.  Since students learned all the formulas yesterday they should be able to complete the entire activity.  Make sure that they use a t test statistic and not a z.  Also, if you are using table B to calculate the P-value, the smaller sample size should be used for the degrees of freedom.

Note:

North Carolina won, 83 – 66.
