Early Solutions for the 2021 AP Statistics Exam

Updated: Aug 9, 2023

The College Board typically releases the free response questions for the AP Statistics Exam about 48 hours after the exam. So starting early Wednesday afternoon, we feverishly refreshed the College Board website like we were trying to buy tickets for a Justin Timberlake concert. It turns out that some of our 2021 AP Exam predictions were spot on (part b of the significance test being about Type I, II errors) and totally wrong on others (predicted the wrong significance test).

So here goes with our first attempt at solutions (please be gentle if we have any errors!)

QUESTION 1: HOSPITAL STAY

QUESTION 2: WALKING AND CHOLESTEROL

QUESTION 3: EMPLOYEE GIFT CARDS

QUESTION 4: INCREASING PET SUPPLIES SALES

QUESTION 5: SODA IN THREE CITIES

QUESTION 6: BASEBALL TEAM ATTENDANCE

I had some students who tested on May 17 who had this version, but others who had a different version. Are both versions released?

Replying to

Only the first administration is released. Administrations 2, 3, and 4 will not be released and should not be discussed.

Thanks, Stats Medic! FRQ #1 part (c) is clever and interesting, as Method A for finding outliers is based on a multiplier of IQR (a resistant measure of variability) while Method B is based on non-resistant measures of center (mean) and variability (SD). Clearly, it's all about resistant and non-resistant measures in skewed distributions, and I like your solution. But I'll be very interested to see what the scoring elements will be -- what the College Board expects students to be able to say.
