Students Struggled With…
  • Deciding on the strength of a scatterplot.  They used the word strong too loosely.by a constant would not change the correlation.

  • The concept that subtracting each value by a constant would not change the correlation.

Remedies…
  • Encourage students to use "-ly" words for strength to soften them.  However, correlations close to 0.5 should be described as moderate and not fairly strong.

  • Reiterate that correlation describes the points in relationship to each other.  If you shift the entire distribution the points don't move relative to each other.
