This review activity will help students to make connections between sampling distributions for sample proportions (Lesson 7.3) and sampling distributions for sample means (Lessons 7.4 and 7.5). We will use samples of Reese's pieces to collect data. Each students will need at least 30 pieces of candy. We buy them in bulk and distribute them to students in small disposable cups.

You will need to prepare two posters for dotplots and students will need sticker dots. Refer to the scales indicated in the activity to set up the dotplots.

Page 1 of the activity focuses on the sampling distribution of sample proportions. Collecting the data is easy here for students as they need only find the proportion of orange candies in a random sample of size 30.

Page 2 of the activity focuses on the sampling distribution of sample means. Collecting data here requires a little bit of work as students need to find the average weight per candy for a random sample of size 30. We borrowed a few scales from the science department. To find the average weight, we had students find the total weight of the cup + 30 candies and then subtract the weight of the cup so that they knew the total weight of just the 30 candies. Dividing that by 30 gives them their sample mean.
